Performance, relief on paper, 2008
My carbon Footprint is both an environmental comment and a printmaker’s pun on the ubiquitous term “carbon footprint“. The piece is the material part of a performance I did in March 2008. I modified a pair of cream, canvas shoes by decorating them with a motif of carbon dioxide molecules and adding lino-cut soles with the same motif. I rolled up ink on a fourteen feet long roll of paper and walked through the carbon-black printing ink several times, to literally make my carbon footprint. As breathing, living beings mostly made up of carbon and hydrogen molecules, we cannot escape making that footprint. However, it is up to our individual choices how large our imprint on the environment is.
