Western Rider

The Western Rider.

Screenprint, 38 x 56 cm, 2011

The Western Knight.

Woodcut and screenprint Chine-collé, 28 x 56 cm, 2011

These editions were created for the Calgary Stampede Artist Ranch project in 2011.

The screen-printed edition is 25 on smooth archival rag paper. The cowboy is printed with a translucent ghostly grey, silver and black on top of a 4-colour printed rasterized photograph. A few copies of The Cowboy were screened on a woodcut print in slightly variable colouring. An edition of 10 was produced of this version.

The Cowboy, wearing half-armor, is modeled after Albrecht Dürer’s famous print, The Rider, which depicts the ideal knight. In the West, the Cowboy embodies the romantic ideal of the Knight. However, this is part of a nostalgic past, as traditional ranching is replaced by more mechanized and modern methods.
